Public Comment Open for Community Wildfire Protection Plan

The Greater Flagstaff Forests Partnership (GFFP) announced the public review period for its 2026 Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is open until April 17.

The CWPP is a collaborative, community-driven plan that outlines local priorities for reducing fire risk and makes recommendations for hazardous fuels reduction, public outreach and education, structural ignitability reduction, and fire response capabilities. These plans serve as both a strategic guide and practical tool to help communities identify hazards, prioritize actions, and strengthen partnerships between residents, fire agencies, land management organizations, and other stakeholders.  It brings together local governments, fire districts, land managers, and community members to:

  • Identify areas most at risk from wildfire
  • Prioritize projects like forest thinning, fuel reduction, and defensible space
  • Improve emergency response and evacuation planning
  • Protect homes, infrastructure, and natural resources

In simple terms, a CWPP is a community-driven roadmap to reduce wildfire risk and improve safety.

Coconino County and local fire districts, in partnership with SWCA Environmental Consultants and the Greater Flagstaff Forests Partnership (GFFP), developed the CWPP with a focus on rural fire districts and tribal communities. This collaborative effort is designed to strengthen community safety and resilience against severe wildfires. The plan works to identify and address areas of vulnerability while prioritizing actions that reduce wildfire risk to people, homes, infrastructure, and important natural resources throughout Coconino County.

Community members are invited to review the draft CWPP and provide feedback to ensure the unique needs of each community is considered.
